1. How to Get from Fiumicino Airport to Rome City Centre by Train

It feels like forever since I last wrote one of these blog posts but as I recently travelled to Rome for a short break, it felt only right to post another and hopefully more will follow soon now that the world is slowly opening up once again. We flew into Fiumicino Airport (also known as Leonardo da Vinci Airport) and one of the best, easiest, quickest and cheapest ways to get from Fiumicino Airport into Rome itself is to take the non-stop Leonardo Express train direct to Termini Station located in the centre of the city.

So here is my full photo guide with information and instructions showing you how easy it is to buy tickets for the Leonardo Express, find the train station at Fiumicino Airport and travel to the city centre of Rome.

In the baggage reclaim area at Fiumicino Airport you will see plenty of signs and adverts for the Leonardo Express everywhere you look and there are even ticket machines available next to the baggage belts which you can use if you wish – there are however more ticket machines available once you get to the train station itself.

After leaving baggage reclaim, simply follow the yellow “Train” signs and take either the escalator or elevator up two levels. Then follow the signs which will take you outside the terminal building and along several moving walkways direct to the train station.

The walk to the train station should take no more than five minutes and once you arrive at the station there are red Trenitalia ticket machines located at the entrance.

The ticket machines can be used in Italian, English, German, French, Spanish, Chinese and Arabic – simply press the flag icon at the bottom of the screen to select which language you would like to use.

As of Winter 2021, tickets for the Leonardo Express cost:

    €14 per adult ticket.
€40 for a group of four adults.
For every paying adult, one child over four and under twelve can travel for free.
Children aged under four travel for free.

To buy tickets on the Leonardo Express from Fiumicino Airport to Roma Termini Station you will need to:

Select “Roma Termini” as your destination.

Select which train and time you would like to travel on – make sure to select the Leonardo Express option as although there is a cheaper train available, it takes three times longer to get to Roma Termini and you have to change trains once.

Select what tickets and how many of each you would like to purchase – either Adult or Child.

The next page is for seat assignments which do not exist on the Leonardo Express so you can press “Forward” to skip this page.

A summary of all the tickets you have selected will appear on the screen – if they are correct, press “Purchase”.

The next step is payment and you can pay with Visa, Mastercard and American Express. Some of the ticket machines in Rome also accept coins and banknotes so check before using if you want to pay for your tickets with cash.

Trains between Fiumicino Airport and Roma Termini run throughout the day (usually every fifteen minutes) so you will not have a long wait for the next train. You can check timetables including the times for the first and last trains on the Trenitalia website. I can also highly recommend the free DB Navigator app (which I use constantly when I travel) that shows train timetables from across the whole of Europe.

If you need to access mobile data whilst visiting Italy, you can purchase a travel E-Sim through Airalo. If you would like to use my referral code NIKKI8866 when signing up, you will receive £2.50 / US$3 off your first purchase.

Before boarding the train, you must also ensure that you validate each of your tickets using the green validation machines located on the platform.

As already mentioned there is no assigned seating on the Leonardo Express so you can take any empty seat on the train and if it is full and you prefer to sit, simply wait for the next train. The journey from Fiumicino Airport to Roma Termini takes thirty two minutes and you can follow the journey on the television screens in the carriage. Make sure to keep your ticket handy as it will be checked during the journey into Rome.

There is plenty of luggage space available on the Leonardo Express and there are also power sockets by the seats as well as a toilet available onboard the train.

From Roma Termini Station you can walk to the Spanish Steps in twenty five minutes, the Colosseum in twenty minutes, Trevi Fountain in twenty minutes and Piazza Navona in thirty minutes. You can also use the Rome Metro or take a taxi or bus to your final destination.

When leaving Roma Termini Station to travel back to Fiumicino Airport the first few steps on the ticket machines are slightly different. You will need to:

    Select “Buy Your Ticket”.

    Select “Fiumicino Aeroporto”

    Select “One Way”

The rest of the process is exactly the same as before and you will also still need to validate your tickets before boarding the train.

The Leonardo Express normally departs from Platforms 23 and 24 at Roma Termini Station however make sure to check the departure boards just in case there is a change – when we travelled the train left from Platform 22 instead.

So as you can see, travelling from Fiumicino Airport into the centre of Rome using the Leonardo Express train is incredibly easy as well as extremely reliable. Enjoy Rome and make sure to have fun travelling the world again!

Since this blog post was written back in 2021, some of the information may no longer be accurate or up to date. Be sure to do your own research and check official websites for the latest details before making any of your own travel plans.

Thank you for all the great info, we are traveling to Florence from the Rome airport by train. When we purchase Florence as the destination, will it tell us that the first leg is on the Leonardo Express? And do you have any hints for switching trains in Rome for tired international travelers?
      Thanks!

Hi Astrid. Changing trains at Termini is very easy but just give yourself enough time so you are not rushing.

And I’ve just looked up trains from Fiumicino to Florence on the Trenitalia website and when you book your tickets you will be able to see all available options and it will say the Leonardo Express 🙂
