1. How to Get from Oslo Airport to Oslo City Centre by Train

    When flying to Oslo in the incredible country of Norway, you will more than likely land at Oslo Gardermoen Airport which is located twenty miles north of the city. Like several airports that I have visited throughout Europe, there are two train services that you can take into the city – one expensive express train aimed at tourists as well as a much more affordable regional train. Both of these trains travel to Oslo Central Station (Oslo Sentralstasjon) also known as Oslo S and take nearly the same amount of time to do the same journey yet one is almost half the price of the other. Norway is already a very expensive country to visit but by taking the cheaper train when you land, you can save a lot of money.

    To compare both of the train options from Oslo Gardermoen Airport to Oslo S:

    The Flytoget Express train runs every 10-20 minutes and takes either 19 or 22 minutes and costs 210 NOK (£17 / US$23) per adult.

    The Vy Regional train runs every 20 minutes and takes 23 minutes (so only one or four minutes longer!) and costs 114 NOK (£9 / US$13) per adult.

    We finally visited Norway in December 2021 after having our previous trip cancelled in 2020. We were so excited to finally get there and as always I have taken photos and written lots of up to date information, directions and instructions in this blog post of how to take the cheaper Vy regional train to help anyone reading this for when they travel to Oslo themselves.

    After leaving baggage reclaim and customs, turn right and keep walking straight ahead and follow the signs for “Express Train” and “Trains” and the airport train station (Oslo Lufthavn Gardermoen Stasjon) is located towards the far end of the terminal on the arrivals level. You will see a big information board ahead of you in the centre of the area listing all of the upcoming train departures and once here, make sure to go to the left of this board as that is where the blue and white ticket machines (pictured below) for the Vy regional trains are located. Do not go to the right of the information board as this area is for the more expensive Flytoget express train.


    You are able to buy tickets for the Vy train on both these ticket machines as well as on the Vy and RuterBillett App. I used the ticket machines at the airport when we arrived in Oslo and bought tickets for our return journey using one of the Apps – I have included instructions for both in this blog post.

    The ticket machines can be used in both Norwegian as well as in English. After selecting which language you want to use:

    Select “Single Ticket”

    Select your destination by either typing the name of the station or by selecting from the list of popular stations displayed on the right hand side of the screen – both Oslo S as well as Nationaltheatret (the next stop in the city after Oslo S located further along Karl Johans Gate by the Royal Palace) are on this list.

    If on the next screen you get a message stating that this ticket is not valid on the Flytoget train, this is a good sign as you are in the right place and using the correct machines.


    Select what kind of tickets and how many of each you would like to purchase.

    The next step is payment and you can pay with Visa, Mastercard and American Express as well as cash. You will not have any issues using a debit or credit card in Norway as nearly everything is cashless – we used cards for everything during our entire stay.

    The fares have increased slightly since my trip two months ago. As of February 2022 the current single ticket fares are:

    Adult 114 NOK
    Senior (Aged 67 and over) 57 NOK
    Child (Aged 6-17) 57 NOK
    Child (Aged 0-5) Free of Charge


    Once you have your tickets in hand, you can take any of the three following trains into Oslo:

    R10 towards Drammen
    R11 towards Skien
    L12 towards Kongsberg

    Vy trains for Oslo S usually depart from Track 4 but make sure to check the information screen in case of any changes on the day. You can take either the escalator or stairs down to the train platform and there is also an elevator available if you have any larger luggage or children with you.


    When on the platform do not be alarmed if you see the Flytoget express train on the opposite platform as it departs next door from Track 3.

    Once onboard the Vy train there are small luggage racks by the doors in each carriage as well as above the seats. There are also power sockets available at each seat along with free wifi, toilets and vending machines throughout the train. Make sure to keep your ticket handy as it will be checked by an inspector once the train is underway. The journey from Oslo Gardermoen Airport to Oslo Sentralstasjon takes twenty three minutes and you can follow the journey on the television screens in each carriage. The train will make one short stop at Lillestrøm on the outskirts of the city before continuing to Oslo S.

    Each single ticket is valid for 2.5 hours after purchase and valid for transfer onto the bus, tram and Metro in Oslo.


    It is also incredibly easy to buy train tickets using the Vy App. We bought the tickets for our return journey from Oslo S to Oslo Airport using the App a few days later and it was a very quick, easy and painless process.

    To buy tickets from Oslo Sentralstasjon to Oslo Gardermoen Airport using the Vy App simply:

    In the “Travel From” box type “Oslo S” and in the “Travel To” box type “Oslo Airport” – or the opposite way round if using the app when you arrive in Norway to buy tickets from the airport into the city.

    A list of the next departures will be displayed, simply select the train you wish to take. The train information will be shown including if the train is on time, its current location and what track it will depart from.

    You can then select what tickets and how many of each you would like to purchase.

    After payment, you can see your purchased tickets in the “My Tickets and Trips” section on the home page of the app – you can simply show the attached QR code to the inspector once onboard the train.


    To travel back from Oslo S to Oslo Gardermoen Airport, you can take the following trains:

    R10 towards Lillehammer
    R11 towards Eidsvoll
    L12 towards Eidsvoll

    Vy trains from Oslo S towards Oslo Airport mostly depart from Track 11 but once again, either check on the app or the information screens inside the station on the day to make sure you go to the right one.



    So there is the cheapest and easiest way to travel by train from Oslo Gardermoen Airport to Oslo city centre and back. As you can see it is a very quick and simple journey and extremely difficult to go wrong.

      Hi! I bought the Ruter R10 tickets from Oslo Airport to Nationaltheatret on the Vy website. However, I’m only able to view the trip details but not the tickets/QR codes in the Vy app. Would you know if the tickets/QR codes will appear later in the app on the day of travel? I didn’t get any tickets in my email either, just the receipt 🙁

        I am flying from South Africa and as it’s winter and I am joining a cruise from Bergen, I will have a 23 kg carry on luggage and a 7 kg cabin bag. Will I be able to use the Vy Regional train with my luggage?

          Hi Hamsha we travelled on the train with our luggage no problem. There are overhead racks where you can place bags and there are also some luggage racks in each carriage.

        Hi Suzy I’ve just looked it up and tried working it out for you. The total fare for everyone for the Vy regional train would be 342 NOK and the Flytoget would be 420 NOK so the Vy train still works out 78 NOK cheaper making it the better option.

      Hi Nikki! I’m booking all of our train tickets for our April trip to Norway and I’m unsure if I should book the train ticket ahead of time or not. We are travelling with kids, so the more I can do ahead of time-the better. I have heard that customs can be really backed up (this was last summer so I’m not sure if it was just because of all of the flight issues last summer). We are flying direct from New York on Norse so we won’t have any concerns of connecting flights to back us up. If I book the ticket now (looking at 2 hours after we land) and we get held up in customs longer than that, is the train ticket good for any train going to Oslo S for 2 1/2 hours of the actual train ticket or is it just good for bus/metro for 2 1/2 hours after (i.e. we would have to make the actual train that we booked)? I have been looking everywhere online and I can’t seem to find the answer. Thanks!

        Hi Nikki. The truth is I am not sure if you book online whether or not you can use your ticket for another train. However buying tickets on the day whether by the app or on the ticket machines is so simple that I would recommend doing that as at least it’s something you do not need to worry about if there are any delays.       Love your posts. We will have the Oslo Pass which is valid for train to the airport, but I understand you have to pay extra to go through 2 zones. Do you know how to use the VY app along with the Oslo Pass? Thanks for any info you can share.

        Hi Gloria I’m afraid I do not know as I have never used the Oslo Pass. There’s some useful information on this page that I found – it sounds like you just need to pay for the extra zones and there is a ticket desk right next to the machines at the airport who will be able to help you 🙂

      I also just asked the ticket conductor and if he says you are back on the train within 2.5 hours then you can use the same ticket to go back to the airport, for those visiting the city on a layover

      Hi we will be staying in Oslo for three days so is it worth getting a travel card for 48 hours from the airport and will it be valid for all the VY trains and local buses and trams in the city? Please let me know as we are not sure whether to buy a travel card or a single ticket

        Hi Zara if you are talking about the 48 Hour Oslo Pass, it will only cover local transportation in zones 1 and 2 within the city. The airport is located in zone 4 so you would need to buy an extra ticket to cover the additional zones.

      Hello. My family will be staying in Oslo for 1 night before we connect to our 10 day cruise. So as you can expect we will have some luggage with us. I’m interested in taking the train but is there a better train to take with 3 large suitcases plus carry-ons? Or are we better off with ordering a “minibuss”? Is there a map of the train stops in the city center? Hoping to identify which hotel to reserve. Thank you.

      Flytoget is now 230 NOK and the local Vy train is 120 NOK (May 2024).

      Hi , on the train from the airport to the central station do both the train companies provide luggage storage place and is there any restriction on how much weight I can carry ?
      Is it free included with the ticket or do we have to pay for the luggage
